Plays The Danger Game

Last years fawn runs down the hill,  abruptly halts,
looks to the right,  then the left,  ears twitch in opposite directions,
tail flags  shows its white.  Runs to the right  stops,  runs to the left  stops,
sees me standing  stalk still,  scrutinizes me,  doesn't trust what it sees,
gives me the side-eye.
 
Hurriedly trots across the lawn,  stops
feeds from the harvest of plentiful acorns.
Blue jay sweeps past,  fawn plays as if every move were a dangerous game,
must be a male.
