RADIO DAY - Time Travel ~ Greg Berg

We did the radio interview yesterday. Kelsey brought two friends that had attended the Art Explosion last year. I was nervous and her two friends were even more nervous..Kelsey was like an old pro!  At the end of the interview they said "She should head up the ArtBarns PR department!" Needless to say the Art Explosion Day interview went well, and they asked for us to come back next year.

Here is my short story for the day.

TIME TRAVEL.

The excitement of a "real radio interview" was absolutely thrilling to the three young small town girls, listening to music, giggling and talking in the back seat of the late model truck. The kids acted like they were on another planet during the tour of the radio station..a planet where young girls are quiet and observant.

Upon arrival at the station a very nice, soft spoken, older gentlemen greeted us at the door, then took down names, ages and home towns of the kids. The nice man gave us a tour of the small place with a trip across the main lobby, then down a short hall to the broadcast room. On tip toes, the three girls gazed through thickened glass at the DJ placing giant black circles called "records" on a "turn-table". The ceiling emanated the smooth music of the late 50s and earlier, as we walked by a wall of reel to reel tapes.  The three girls remained in awe at the array of well kept older radio equipment, and "funny music".

For me It was like a blast from the past, analog read outs, records, reel to reel tape. I hadn't seen this stuff since I was a little boy! Thoughts of the past gave way to wonder. Where did they get parts for these relics? My thoughts were quickly interrupted by two very nice, older guys in suits setting up for the interview. We were instructed to sit in front of the bigger than normal microphones and just "be ourselves".

The Fifteen minute interview went as smooth as the gentleman's deep soft voice, then as quick as it started the gray haired fellow (with the equally gray mustache) showed us the way out. He told us to "be sure and come back next year", gave us a big smile, a wave and headed back into the realm of radio relics.

We hopped into our 2002 F150, quickly extinguished The Radio Disney CD and tuned into 95.7 FM and Benny Goodman trying to extend our visit to the past. Driving to the outskirts of the small town proved fatal to our radio reception as it faded in and out it eventually gave way to a high power, rock station located 50 miles away! That was about the time we turned the radio off.
